The present Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (formerly the Ministry of Irrigation, Water Development and Flood Control) is responsible for the overall development and management of water resources in the country. According to the ministry’s memorandum, the former Ministry of Irrigation, Water Development, and Flood Control were renamed as Ministry of Water Resources.
According to the Allocation of Business of the Rules of Business of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the scope of work of the Ministry of Water Resources is as follows:
1. Development and control of rivers and river basins;
2. Provide general policy and technical assistance in the areas of irrigation, flood control, waterlogging, drainage, and river erosion;
3. Irrigation, Flood Forecasting and Warning, Flood Control Installations, Flood Causes, and Flood Damage;
4. Conduct basic, major, and applied research on river basin projects and flood control installations;
5. International cooperation in flood control and water resources development;
6. International Commission and Conference on Irrigation, Flood Control, and Water Resource Management;
7. River dredging, canal excavation, and maintenance under various projects through Bangladesh Water Development Board; Construction and maintenance of water control infrastructure on canals under canal excavation program;
