Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority was established in 1956 by the Government of East Pakistan as the East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority. At that time, the company was formed to control, manage and develop the shipping sector in the region. The East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958 was established on 31 October 1956 by the East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, it was renamed Bangladesh’s Inland Water Transport Authority.
